NEWEST GRASSES AND LAWN ALTERNATIVES

Mission Hills Garden Club will be featuring Randy Crow from Green Meadows Growers at the May 25th meeting. Randy is in charge of Sales and Marketing for ornamental grasses and perennials. At this event he will focus on his favorite ornamental grasses and other eco friendly lawn alternatives. Plants will be offered for sale after the talk.

Debra Lee Baldwin welcomes the Mission Hills Garden club for the second time to Oasis Water Efficient Gardens in Escondido, where she will again give a potting demonstration, then help us fill containers we've brought with succulents from the nursery's extensive selection. The hands-on part of the class size is limited to 20 so that Debra isn't spread too thin trying to assist participants.

Where: Oasis Nursery in Escondido

Cost: The fee is $25.00, which includes the cost of Debra’s time/expertise and a luncheon. (Oh, we usually get a discount on plant material from Oasis)

Transportation: is on your own (car pooling recommended)

The event is strictly limited to paid persons – club members. This event was full and sold out last year – register early!

The Master Gardeners are planning a bus trip to Los Angeles to see the Arlington Garden in Pasadena and the Getty Villa gardens in Malibu. In addition there will be stops at two specialty nurseries in the Pasadena/Marina del Rey areas. This takes place ***May 5, Cinco de Mayo***, and non-MGs are invited to join in. Six historic Coronado homes will be featured on, Mother’s Day. This year’s tour will feature an eclectic mixture of time periods and architecture and will include several homes lived in by early leaders in naval aviation. The annual Home Tour is a major fundraiser for the Coronado Historical Association. Tickets may be purchased in advance either at the Coronado Visitor Center (operated by the CHA), 1100 Orange Avenue, Coronado, or online at www.coronadohistory.org. As more and more of us are putting in drought tolerant gardens, there may occasions when our mature plants no longer fit our new garden design. The San Diego Zoo and/or SD Zoo Safari Park (aka Wild Animal Park) may be interested in your plants. Call the main office of the Horticultural Department at SD Zoo Safari Park: 760-738-5054. Since the SD Zoo and SD Zoo Safari Park are both nonprofit organizations your gift is tax deductible.

Garden Walk News

The Annual Mission Hills Garden Walk will take place on Saturday, May 7th. We need docents to greet visitors in the homeowners' gardens. You do not have to be a garden club member to volunteer, so ask a friend to do a shift with you and in return you will both receive a free ticket for the walk.

Movie and Popcorn Night “Sunset Boulevard”.

The April 27th Mission Hills Garden Club meeting will feature a screening of the classic film "Sunset Boulevard" to help put members and guests in the mood for the upcoming Mission Hills Garden Walk. Slated for the day before Mother's Day, this year's Garden Walk is titled "A Stroll Down Sunset Boulevard," and what could be more fun than watching this gem of a Hollywood movie starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden. The meeting begins at 6pm. Attendees will enjoy refreshments and popcorn and are encouraged to come dressed as a character from the movie.

"Global Gardening"

Mission Hills Garden Club is dedicated to supporting the Horticulture Programs in San Diego schools at the elementary and secondary levels as well as in various local community colleges. For our March meeting, we are showcasing Crawford High School and their extraordinary gardening program they have developed with the help of The International Rescue Committee.

Please join us to hear how this diverse educational complex, with over 27 cultures, has given its students the opportunity to pursue the “American Dream”!

Presented in a multimedia format they will share with you a heart warming tale of what Mission Hills Garden Club's contributions have done for the personal, academic and social lives of the intern recipients & their schools. Hear and see how our support is truly reaching out on a global level.

The finale will be learning how to create "SEED BALLS" like the ones used for the dedication of the New Roots Community Garden which First Lady Michelle Obama recently visited. (All materials provided)

We aim to pay each of our youth $250/semester for completing 60 hours of labor and $350 for student managers. Any amount will be a great help!

As always we have our great plant exchange going on at the monthly meeting: bring and/or take plants. This time Dick Disraeli will bring 7+ big green Agaves (2 to 3 feet in width, trunk 2 to 3 inches). Please arrange for taking home these big plants, if you are interested. They retail at about 200 $ each. You can also call Dick (619 295 2553), if you want to cut and pick them up from his home. He requests that they will be planted in Mission Hills.

(intersection of Goldfinch and West Lewis) Volunteers Needed! Local residents and business owners, 6-12th grade school students in need of fulfilling volunteer hours, Boy Scouts, local Mission Hills Friends of Canyons participants, and native plant society members. Please come and participate in cleaning up this future Mission Hills Overlook! Make sure to bring gloves and a rake, clippers, or a shovel. Refreshments will be provided!

Mission Hills Garden Club is dedicated to supporting the Horticulture Programs in San Diego schools at the elementary and secondary levels as well as in various local community colleges. For our March meeting, we are showcasing Crawford High School and their extraordinary gardening program they have developed with the help of The International Rescue Committee.

Please join us to hear how this diverse educational complex, with over 27 cultures, has given its students the opportunity to pursue the “American Dream”!

Presented in a multimedia format they will share with you a heart warming tale of what Mission Hills Garden Club's contributions have done for the personal, academic and social lives of the intern recipients & their schools. Hear and see how our support is truly reaching out on a global level.

The finale will be learning how to create "SEED BALLS" like the ones used for the dedication of the New Roots Community Garden which First Lady Michelle Obama recently visited. (All materials provided)

Debra Lee Baldwin welcomes the Mission Hills Garden club for the second time to Oasis Water Efficient Gardens in Escondido, where she will again give a potting demonstration, then help us fill containers we've brought with succulents from the nursery's extensive selection. The hands-on part of the class size is limited to 20 so that Debra isn't spread too thin trying to assist participants.

Where: Oasis Nursery in Escondido

Cost: The fee is $25.00, which includes the cost of Debra’s time/expertise and a luncheon. (Oh, we usually get a discount on plant material from Oasis)

Transportation: is on your own (car pooling recommended)

The event is strictly limited to paid persons – club members. This event was full and sold out last year – register early!

Best of the Best: Succulent Container Gardens well known author, Debra Lee Baldwin, will be speaking to members and the public at its monthly meeting in January. She will be discussing her beautiful new book, Succulent Container Gardens, which has just been tagged as one of the ten best garden books of 2010 in several publishing and distribution polls. No stranger to the writing world, she has authored and provided the photographs for several other volumes and articles on gardening with succulents. Her efforts have probably done more to popularize this landscape tool than any one other individual. Books will be available for purchase and she will remain to sign them.

SDFA is again offering the bus trip to Pasadena for viewing the Rose Parade Floats. The trip is January 2, 2011. Reservations are being taken now - there are only 55 seats available. Stroll among the parked floats from the Pasadena Rose Parade. There will be excellent photo opportunities and a knowledgeable person at each float to answer any questions. Food, drinks and restrooms are available on the grounds.

Evenings in December, the San Diego Botanic Garden is transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland with over 100,000 sparkling lights illuminating the Garden for a magical holiday experience. Leave the hustle and bustle of the malls behind and enjoy a relaxing evening strolling through the lighted Garden. Adding to the sparkle is the "Poinsettia Garden," festively decorated with many varieties of poinsettias.

Mission Hills Garden Club will once again participate in December Nights Festival of Trees in Balboa Park, in Del Prado Room #101, Friday Dec 3rd at 5pm until 10 pm and Saturday, Dec 4th from 10am to 10pm. The entire park is open to the public with all museums free, plus entertainment, vendors, delicious food etc. It is the largest free event in San Diego . Over 50,000 attend each day.
Our club will be decorating a gorgeous tree along with many other organizations making Room 101 in the Prado Building a winter wonderland. Come early, parking is difficult , best to be dropped off or ride a bike. We have been participating in the event for over 10 years. The theme this year is "EVERYTHING GOES" so come on board, volunteer to help with the tree and attend the festivities (Cheryl Gaidmore).

"Mission Hills Nursery" is supporting the Susan G. Komen Walkers this Saturday with pink bra donations to a women's rescue center. Bring yours in and contribute to the effort. Garden Club Meeting:
Speaker: Bill Toone on “Drought and Water Conservation”
We are thrilled to announce that Bill Toone will be joining us to speak on “Drought-A Local Perspective on a Global Problem”. Bill has quite a varied background which began at UCDavis in Avian Sciences. He is best known today for his work in sustainable development and management practices in developing countries. He is at the helm of the ECOLIFE Foundation which concerns itself with the “disconnect between quality of life for people and the health of their natural resources”. Bill will not only share his experiences from around the globe helping groups solve water quality and shortage problems, but will bring it close to home with his own sustainable water harvesting practices at his own residence. These are easy solutions that we can all adopt in our quest to save water and adjust to our changing climate.

Speaker: Bill Toone on “Drought and Water Conservation”
We are thrilled to announce that Bill Toone will be joining us to speak on “Drought-A Local Perspective on a Global Problem”. Bill has quite a varied background which began at UCDavis in Avian Sciences. He is best known today for his work in sustainable development and management practices in developing countries. He is at the helm of the ECOLIFE Foundation which concerns itself with the “disconnect between quality of life for people and the health of their natural resources”. Bill will not only share his experiences from around the globe helping groups solve water quality and shortage problems, but will bring it close to home with his own sustainable water harvesting practices at his own residence. These are easy solutions that we can all adopt in our quest to save water and adjust to our changing climate.

Mission Hills Garden Club will once again participate in December Nights Festival of Trees in Balboa Park, in Del Prado Room #101, Friday Dec 3rd at 5pm until 10 pm and Saturday, Dec 4th from 10am to 10pm. The entire park is open to the public with all museums free, plus entertainment, vendors, delicious food etc. It is the largest free event in San Diego . Over 50,000 attend each day.
Our club will be decorating a gorgeous tree along with many other organizations making Room 101 in the Prado Building a winter wonderland. Come early, parking is difficult , best to be dropped off or ride a bike. We have been participating in the event for over 10 years. The theme this year is "EVERYTHING GOES" so come on board, volunteer to help with the tree and attend the festivities (Cheryl Gaidmore).

Speaker Jim Mumford of GreenScapedBuildings.com. “Living Walls and Roofs – Purposes and Creation” will be presenting his program on converting your walls or roof to a living, breathing area of beauty and utility. Vertical gardens are becoming more and more popular, and under his skillful direction, you can have one too. Learn how to combine texture and color in pleasing designs using sedums, echeverias, portulacas, gasterias and more. For utility, vertical herb gardens are being spotted at restaurants and are an alternative to succulents. Roof top gardening allows for vegetable gardening that are truly gopher proof. Garden Club Meeting: Speaker Jim Mumford of Green Scaped Buildings. “Living Walls and Roofs – Purposes and Creation”Jim Mumford is a horticulturist, Certified Landscape Professional, and an accredited Green Roof Professional. Jim found early on that by combining rain water harvesting with home grown food in a closed –circuit ecosystem on walls and roofs would work quite well in urban environments. He has quickly become the go to guy for such systems and serves clients not only locally but nationally (Meredith French for Programs).

The Projects Committee meeting supports a garden at Grant Elementary. Dave Martocchio, a teacher at Grant has been working for eight years on a project in the canyon behind the school. It's America's Night Out Against Crime!
The "27th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2010. Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 36 million people participated in National Night Out 2009.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Did you know this about the Club:
Petals for Patriots is a project the Mission Hills Garden Club has been doing for over 2 years. We meet once a month in a member’s garden arranging 30-35 vases to be delivered to the Wounded Warrior Unit at Balboa Naval Hospital. We have been getting donated flowers from Dos Gringos in North County but lately they haven't surplus to donate.
If any of you know growers or other resources for our materials, please contact Cheryl Gaidmore 619-992-7434 or email cherylgaidmore@aol.com. We want to continue this work as it truly puts a big smile on the young soldiers faces when their fresh vase of flowers arrive from us. Thanks for any input (Cheryl Gaidmore for Petals for Patriots)

The MHGC is sponsoring a Pioneer Park concert on July 23rd at 5:30. The music will be Zydeco. We are planning a potluck for garden club members (it was much fun last year). Sign up for a Lunch & Tour of the wonderful Oddo Gardens, Elfin Forest (detailed map provided w/ registration with Carol, 858 909 0001). Cost is $15.00. Registration (with payment) will be for "members only" until July 15th, when it will open to non member friends on a space available basis.
I am delighted to be able to offer our club a special afternoon in the gardens of Frank and Susan Oddo located in the Elfin Forest. We need volunteers who help on the luncheon. Please contact Carol.

The property is set on 3 acres encompassing a variety of garden themes. The succulent garden and a 75-foot running creek replaced a water-thirsty lawn in 2008. There is a full size bronze mountain lion perched on a rock in a grassland savannah. For rose lovers, there are 25 AARS winning roses. A little further down the hill and you will encounter the all-organic vegetable garden, lined by the lower rose walk. There is even still a small lawn left that is surrounded by a Yucca forest. Return to the spa pavilion and continue around the house to the 5,000 gallon koi pond and newly built whimsical viewing area. A little further around the house and you arrive at the deck where we will enjoy lunch and enjoy the view that will forever be parkland preserve.

The Elfin Forest Garden Tour has selected these gardens twice to be on their tour. The vegetable garden was featured in the April 2010 issue of San Diego Home & Garden magazine and the succulent garden was photographed for an upcoming issue in the same publication. The San Diego Horticulture Society selected the Oddo gardens to host its Volunteer Appreciation Party in June 2010. The Koi Club of San Diego held its May meeting in the gardens.

Fausto Palafox, Owner of Mission Hills Nursery and Member of The City of San Diego's Community Forest Advisory Board will speak on “The Urban Forest” and the important role it plays in the general well being of San Diego's population, how it improves our local climate, works to capture rain water that would otherwise go down storm drains and, lastly, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. He will speak about the importance and urgency of reversing the loss of approximately 27% of our shade canopy since 1985. He will explain this national movement to replace lost urban forests and how we can get involved using recommended common sense solutions. This is a topic that is just now getting the attention it deserves as we look to ways to improve air quality, preserve water shed and save water from run off and evaporation (Meredith French for Programs).

NEW! Bring your “dull blades” to the next meeting. Carol will introduce the knife/tool sharpening lady to the club: Laurie MacDonald - she will be available that evening to do sharpening (Carol Costarakis for Special Events).

Bring nice items for our raffle (tax deductible), plants/cuttings for our plant exchange table, and questions/samples for the Plant Doctor. Socialize with other garden aficionados, take plants home, enjoy munchies, have fun.

Sign up for a Lunch & Tour of the wonderful Oddo Gardens, Elfin Forest (detailed map provided w/ registration with Carol, 858 909 0001). Cost is $15.00. Registration (with payment) will be for "members only" until July 15th, when it will open to non member friends on a space available basis.

I am delighted to be able to offer our club a special afternoon in the gardens of Frank and Susan Oddo located in the Elfin Forest.

The property is set on 3 acres encompassing a variety of garden themes. The succulent garden and a 75-foot running creek replaced a water-thirsty lawn in 2008. There is a full size bronze mountain lion perched on a rock in a grassland savannah. For rose lovers, there are 25 AARS winning roses. A Beginner's Guide to Backyard Chickens: Have you ever thought about adding animals to your garden oasis? Love the idea of fresh eggs or unlimited "compost"? If so, then this workshop is for you! Join us as we embark upon all things chicken including the pros and cons of chicken ownership, general terminology, basic anatomy, food/shelter requirements and estimated maintenance costs. We will also address some of the challenges to raising chickens including local predators and city regulations. This light hearted workshop is packed with information to help you decide with confidence if you are ready to start your own city flock.

BIO:

Shelly Stewart is a stay at home mother and educational program director for Victory Gardens San Diego, a non-profit dedicated to the development of Earth-friendly home, school & community Gardens. Shelly's environmental awareness began with the birth of her son four years ago. She researched diligently in an effort to provide the healthiest lifestyle for a newborn, but her findings raised disturbing questions about the actual nutritional and economic value of industrialized food. Unable to find a definitive answer to her concerns, she decided to experiment with sustainability and self-reliance, beginning with raising chickens in the city. Surprisingly, this undertaking has brought much fulfillment, comedy and joy to her family and she enjoys sharing her personal experience and lessons learned with others.

Speaker: BILL TOONE on Water Conservation in San Diego Gardens

Bill Toone is Executive Director of ECOLIFE FOUNDATION. He is a conservation biologist with over 30 years of global field experience, where his work for the San Diego Zoo's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) has placed him on the front lines of conservation, beginning with the California Condor Recovery Program.

Successes with condors launched Bill into a dual career as international conservation biologist and spokesperson for conservation issues. Bill makes frequent media appearances, and has been featured in numerous PBS documentaries. He has developed an important contemporary perspective on conservation and the human condition. He is well qualified to assist the San Diego gardening community to address the problems of water conservation that we all face as we care for our gardens in 2010.

Plant lovers and bargain hunters won't want to miss the Master Gardener Plant Sale on June 19 in Balboa Park.
The annual event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 101 and the patio of Casa del Prado in Balboa Park . .

As with past sales, shoppers can expect a wide variety of plants at below retail prices. Many were propagated by Master Gardeners, while others were donated by specialty growers and collectors.
New this year is the sale of birdhouses in a variety of styles and sleeve-protecting gauntlets, all handcrafted by Master Gardeners. Floral note cards also will be available for purchase.
Plants for sale will include a wide variety of annuals, perennials, succulents, ornamental trees, heirloom and unusual vegetables, staghorn ferns, a wide variety of bromeliads and an abundance of other plants for home landscapes.
Master Gardeners will be available to help with plant selections and provide growing information. .
Horticultural and pest control advice also will be provided by Master Gardeners on a variety of gardening subjects. Exhibits will include information on the following topics:

Identifying friends and foes in your garden
Safe pest control
Landscaping tips to help defend your home from wildfires
Composting how-to
Tomato, avocado and citrus tree care
Identification of invasive plants
Sustainable gardening
How to make your garden more drought tolerant

Park free of charge in Balboa Park lots and take the free tram to the sale. Purchased plants can be held in a holding area while shoppers enjoy the park or retrieve their cars. A loading zone makes plant pick-up simple and easy.
